Proper hand washing (washing hands with soap), can reduce deaths from diarrheal diseases by at least 30%.
That’s right! One of the simple acts that will help people reduce their risk of contracting diarrheal diseases is practicing proper hand washing at key moments. Hand washing is so commonplace in developed countries, but its importance hasn’t yet quite caught on in some developing communities.
The image below from Fast Med is a great reminder for kids of when those key moments are.
Global Handwashing Day began in 2008 as part of an initiative by the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW) to encourage people all over the world to practice hand washing with soap.
Shout out to all the members of PPPHW for this movement, who provide financial support and in-kind donations. It was great to see some familiar brands who have made this initiative a part of their culture of giving back: Colgate-Palmolive, P&G & Unilever.
