In 2014, the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency revealed that recycling and composting an aggregate of 89 million tons of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) annually eliminates more than 181 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
This is equivalent to eliminating the annual emissions from 38 million passenger vehicles!
MSW is comprised of household materials that are commonly discarded after use (such as packaging, food waste, grooming materials, utensils, paper, and more), and does not encompass wastes from industrial processes or waste.
Striking statistic in America: about 95% of the food that could be composted there ends up in landfills and incinerators, which muck up our land, and create pollution!
Ireland, on the other hand, ranked 3rd in the EU for recycling in 2015, seeing drastic increases in the recycling rates of MSW, and decreases of about 1 million tons of MSW going to landfills. However, Ireland, like America, lags in composting.
So truly, if you want to help make an easy impact today, get a composting system started at home!

A little goes a long way, and even just beginning a collection bin for your organic discards (using a compostable bag, of course), and throwing that into your city’s green bin, can make a load of difference.
